Cooper, John Ingram
HistoryJohn Ingram Cooper was born in 1933 in the United Kingdom and studied architecture at the University of Liverpool before working for William Holford and Associates and becoming a partner in the practice. He worked on major hospital, educational and commercial projects, as well as in practice administration. John Cooper worked on the University College of Wales, Women’s Halls of Residence (1965-1970) and on the Royal Liverpool Teaching Hospital, UK (1970-1976). He remained a consultant to Holford Associates whilst in Australia between 1976-1991. John Cooper came to Adelaide in 1977 to take up the position of Head of School, Architecture and Building at the South Australian Institute of Technology (SAIT) following the retirement of Gavin Walkley a position he held until 1990. He was a Council member and President of the South Australian Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects from 1984-1986. He was also an elected member of the Architects Board of South Australia. He finished at the SAIT at the end of 1987 and later departed for England to take up the position of Dean of the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside where he was made a Professor of Architecture. John Cooper returned to Adelaide in 1998 where he again served on the Architects Board of South Australia and the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia.
