Twopeny, John Richard Nowell
HistoryJohn Richard Nowell Twopeny (born 1/1/1929) worked as an architect in private practice throughout his career and his commissions spanned a broad range of projects. Born in Bowral, NSW, Twopeny was educated in South Australia at The Mount School, Mount Lofty and St Peter’s College and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in 1952 from the University of Adelaide. He was in private practice as an architect between 1951 and 1959, being an associate to James S. Hall between 1954 and 1959; in 1959 he joined Kenneth Milne Boehm Bulbeck & Partners as an associate, becoming partner in 1960. The firm became Kenneth Milne, Boehm, Twopeny & Moss in 1961, Milne Boehm Twopeny & Hodge in 1963, Boehm Twopeny & Partners in 1973 and Boehm Twopeny Architects Pty Ltd in 1976. He took leave in 1954 to tour the United Kingdom and Europe, including eight months working in an architect’s office in London. He undertook a world tour in 1976 and spent time in Indonesia in 1976. Twopeny’s architectural commissions both in the Adelaide suburbs and rural areas of the state were varied and included industrial (BHP staff quarters amenities building, Whyalla), sporting (Flagstaff Hill Golf and Country Club clubhouse), commercial (offices for Gibbs Bright), educational (primary school library, Alice Springs), medical (wards and service wings, Estcourt House), residential (his first being for C.C. Deeley in 1950 and his last for C.F. Angas in 1977) and the hospitality industry (Traforti Restaurant, Barmera). Twopeny became an Associate of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) on graduating and a Fellow in 1970. Between 1967 and 1974 he served on the membership and other committees of the RAIA.
